William Kamkwamba, Malawian village of Masitala, Africa. At age 14 he quit school as his farming parents could not afford the £50 per year fees. After droughts in 2002 killed thousands and his family faced starvation themselves, he built his own windmill from junk to make electricity and pump water – after coming across a book with a picture of a windmill in it, his first prototype turned into the real thing. He quotes “Many, including my mother, thought I was going crazy – people thought I was smoking marijuana”. That ended the day he climbed his tower and attached a car bulb. Read the full article about ‘Malawi Windmill Boy’ in a BBC article here. What the 2009 article will not tell you is a few years later after his first windmill, he received his 4-year Ivy Leave Degree in the US for Environmental Studies with a Minor in Engineering. Sounds like that Monkey has bigger windmills planned!
